One excursion that is a must when visiting Abruzzo is to go hunting for the woods’ most secret and prized delicacies – truffles!
Abruzzo is famous as a region throughout Italy for producing the most truffles that are exported to afficicianados and the best restaurants around the world.
Join us for a guided truffle hunt followed by a delicious multi-course dinner using the truffles. We offer 2 unique truffle hunting excursions in Roccascalegna and Goriano Sicoli!
Roccascalegna
Franco, your (truffle hunter) and his dog plus our Ezio will accompany you through the olive grove up to linden, hazelnut and oak trees copse to experience the wonders of a truffle dog’s nose in uncovering aromatic musky black truffles.
Afterwards, you will have a multi-course lunch at one of Abruzzo’s best Agriturismo, famed for its home-cured salamis and meats, wonderful antipasti and Cosimo’s delicious slow-cooked lamb, and the truffle you found, shaved onto the hand-made pasta that we make together, for those who are interested in a quick demonstration.
We will walk off lunch up at the 16th-century castle, Roccascalegna, which was the location for the TV series ‘In the Name of the Rose’.
Goriano Sicoli
After taking a morning coffee in Goriano Sicoli together with host Ezio, Mirko or Andrea accompanied by the main stars of your truffle hunting adventure, doggies, Mike and Roby, will take the group truffle hunting and give some foraging notes along the way.
On arrival back in the town we walk through the small medieval cobbled streets and alleys of Goriano Sicoli. It was much loved by the 20th-century Dutch graphic artist Escher. Following our thirsty work we will have an artisan beer tasting at La Cantina dei Colangelo where we’ll have our delicious lunch. The village’s local microbrewery has won awards from Italy’s Food and Wine magazine, Gambero Rosso. After our tasting, you’ll enjoy a multi-course lunch that uses the truffles we have found in our pasta dish and includes the delectable nutty and tender chickpeas grown locally!
On departure, you will be given a small parting gift of truffles under oil to take home and purchase any truffles and of course the opportunity to buy beer or truffles before you depart.
